Intentional Faith & Guarded Hearts//Devotional

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

The world is increasingly becoming more fearful, more anxious, more divided, and less hopeful. Everything now is about image and the images that are displayed across social media and the news are everything from tragic to catastrophic. It’s so loud out there. But its not only loud out there. It’s loud inside too. Inside our heads are the voices of doubt, insecurity, sabotage, and comparison. Perfectly framed Instagram post reminding us of a more lackluster life unworthy of filters, catchy phrases and hashtags. So much noise and the enemy knows what he is doing. It’s his strategic plan to create so much negative noise that it drowns out the hope. He wants to make it a little harder for people to nestle up with the sweetness of God for being so consumed with the darkness of this world. We should remember that we have an enemy that thrives on darkness and his ultimate plan is to keep us from the Light; that light being God.

It doesn’t matter where you are in your faith walk. If you aren’t intentional about guarding your heart all kind of ugly stuff is going to get in there.

Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.
-Proverbs 4:23
For this reason we have to be intentional about what comes into our eye and ear gates. We especially have to be intentional about the things that we speak. Our souls hear every word that we speak and internalizes it. Our words lay seeds in our heart and it’s up to us to plant good fruit that will spring up and bring life, not death. Sometimes the only words of encouragement we will hear are the words from our own mouths and we have to keep on pushing with that.
Look for good news. Listen to uplifting music. Talk to the positive friend not the gossiping one. Clean out your friends list of anyone who is feeding the darkness and follow people who have chosen to feed hope. I’ve even changed my book selections. Now I’m only reading Faith based inspirational books. Sometimes we may have to decide on the light, humorous, family movie instead of the one encrypted with violence and gore.
The most important thing for me has been listening to and watching people’s testimonies of faith, overcoming, personal miracles and Jesus moments. I seek these out with all diligence to increase my own Faith and belief in the sovereignty of God.  This is what it means when the scripture says, Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
I challenge you this week to trade out a negative for a positive. Push out as much darkness as you can and allow the light of God to light up your life.
